Wat Roka Kandal in Kratie is a preserved pagoda dating from
the 18th or early 19th century located next to the Mekong in Kratie. With its traditional decorations
on a wooden construction it is the only preserved pagoda of this type in Cambodia. The
preservation work was undertaken by the CCC and funded by Koblenz Chamber of Trade &
Crafts in Germany.
The Pagoda and its
surrounding area is used as a handicraft, cultural and tourism centre. It also offers
accommodation in traditional rural houses. These houses are constructed as part of a CCC
project to develop the architecture in rural Cambodia along eco-friendly lines. For
instance all the houses are constructed of bamboo, rattan and palm leaf.
Its
possible to retreat to the monastery by the Mekong for a period of reflection and stay in
relative comfort! |
